8 Bernie Sanders Tweets You Have to Read

By Aleida Moreno on July 22, 2015

It was a series of Bernie Sanders tweets that made me excited for the elections again after a long time of being fed up with the prospect of voting for a new president.

In modern, neoliberal America it’s understandable for us citizens (and non-citizens alike) to find it difficult to find within ourselves a desire to participate in the nation’s politics. It’s easy to become disillusioned and frustrated at politicians making empty promises election after election.

The Democratic/Republican political party binary may cause voting to seem like choosing between two sides of one very bad coin, but this election, it seems as though we can use our votes to help our nation achieve the lesser of the potential evils.

If you still haven’t heard about Bernie Sanders, be sure to check out his campaign. But in the meantime, here are a few recent Bernie Sanders tweets that show some of his views and vocalize his platform. It’s these views that have made him stand out to many young voters as a candidate for the Democratic ticket.

Keep an eye out for my next article about voting which will include why it’s important to also vote in the primaries and what you need to vote for the candidate you want to vote for! In the meantime, check out this selection of Bernie Sanders tweets that might get you excited to vote (for or against him).

1. In several Bernie Sanders tweets, readers are immediately made aware of the way that Sanders doesn’t feel the need to tiptoe around the glaringly obvious issue the U.S. has with structural racism. He addresses it from the beginning for exactly what it is.

2. He admits our impact on climate change and seems eager to bring people on board to help. Too many presidents have glossed over or ignored the evidence presented in the discussion of global warming. There are a few Bernie Sanders tweets that talk about this issue as one that is important to his platform.

Because many past presidents seem to have little to no interest in the education of the general population on the subject of global warming, it’s truly refreshing to see a candidate that possibly sees this as a very important issue.

3. Sanders admits that the minimum wage is not one that allows for people to live quality lives. He thinks that full-time workers, regardless of their occupation, should be making enough to live a good life. Many Bernie Sanders tweets have to do with the current economic situation in the United States and he addresses the wage gap between men and women and recognizes the overall unequal pay across the board that has become an accepted fact of life.

4. He seems to have a very sympathetic view of DREAMers and recognizes the importance of them having their voices heard. Having so much attention paid to the DREAMers is a huge step forward in terms of them getting justice. Oftentimes, DREAMers were simply following their parents into the country, and neither the parents nor the children had any idea that this would make their lives more difficult.

5. He opposes bills like PIPA and SOPA that want to, in a way, censor the internet. These bills began as an attempt to ensure the internet was free of piracy, but the very blurry lines of what websites would be affected by these bills sent people into a panic and the general public seemed very strongly opposed to bills of this kind.

6. He seems to be generally opposed to the cutting of social security benefits. I read this as perhaps an opposition to continued funding for the U.S. military. With the taxes that are paid by a grand majority of America, there are certainly sufficient funds to support our elders. Oftentimes, politicians that oppose the funding for social security seem to be in favor of more military funding, and Sanders seems to be just the opposite.

7. As a woman, there is little that matters more to me when it comes to candidates for positions of power than the way they feel about reproductive or “women’s” rights. The 2012 elections were terrifying for women everywhere, after Mitt Romney was a serious candidate who went as far as opposing funding for cancer screenings provided by Planned Parenthood. According to several Bernie Sanders tweets, women have little to be wary about regarding this issue if he were to become president.

8. As mentioned above, many Bernie Sanders tweets tackle the economic issues in America. Here he speaks about the importance of politicians paying attention to the working class just as much if not more than the wealthy class. The wording specifically addresses the fact that numerous presidential candidates take money from companies or wealthy individuals and that these donations tend to shape the candidates’ platforms.

It is important to remember that no candidate’s tweets (not even these great Bernie Sanders tweets) should be the sole reason why you give your vote to them. In voting, as with many things, research is incredibly important. If  Bernie Sanders’ tweets pictured above helped you decide that you want to vote for Bernie, be sure to check out this handy interactive map to find out how you can go about doing this in your state.

With all of the current events bringing light to the reality of life in America, who you vote for is extremely important. It is critical that all of us eligible college students exercise our right to vote in these upcoming elections. Our voices and opinions matter. Let your voice be heard whether you choose to side with Sanders or oppose him.
